**Gonggong (Sea Snails)**
The iconic Batam dish. Boiled and served with spicy sambal. Use a toothpick to pull out the meat.

**Black Pepper Crab**
Batam-style, heavy on the pepper. Less sweet than Singapore style. Messy and fantastic.

**Chilli Crab**
The classic sweet-spicy tomato-chilli sauce. Great with fried mantou buns.

**BBQ/Steamed Fish**
Pick your fish (red snapper, grouper) at a kelong restaurant. Ask for sambal or kicap manis style.

**Squid with Salted Egg**
Deep-fried squid coated in a creamy, rich salted egg yolk sauce. Addictive.

**Nasi Lemak**
Fragrant coconut rice with fried anchovies, peanuts, cucumber, egg, and sambal. A breakfast king. Best at local kopitiams.

**Mie Tarempa**
Local noodle dish unique to Batam/Riau Islands. Springy noodles with a sweet, slightly spicy sauce. Topped with shrimp, fish cake, and a squeeze of lime.

**Mie Lendir**
Another Batam noodle special. Noodles drowned in a thick, peanut-based gravy (“lendir” means slime, it’s a texture thing). Served with bean sprouts and egg.

**Sup Ikan Batam (Batam Fish Soup)**
Fresh fish slices in a light, tangy, aromatic broth. A known hangover cure.

**Sambal Belimbing**
A local tart fruit (belimbing wuluh) made into a fiery sambal. Ask for it with grilled fish or fried chicken.

**Sate (Satay)**
Skewered grilled meat. Look for Sate Sapi (beef) or seafood satay for a local twist.

**Otak-Otak**
Grilled fish paste in banana leaf. Smoky and fragrant. A perfect snack.

Buy some dry ones to bring home. Amplang (fish cracker balls) are a great local snack.

**Es Campur / Es Teler**
Mixed ice desserts with coconut, avocado, jackfruit, condensed milk, and jelly. Essential for the heat.

**Kopi O / Kopi Susu**
Local coffee. Kopi O is black with sugar. Kopi Susu comes with condensed milk. Kopitiam culture is strong here.

**Teh Obeng**
Iced tea with sugar. The local name for a classic sweet iced tea.

**Kelong Restaurants (Barelang area)**
For the full seafood experience. Try Kelong Shangrila or Sei Enam Kelong. Order Gonggong and crab here.

**Kopitiam (Local coffee shops)**
For breakfast Nasi Lemak, Roti Canai, half-boiled eggs, and Kopi O. Look for places like Aciak Kopitiam.

**Nagoya and Harbour Bay areas**
Many casual eateries and Chinese seafood spots. Wander and pick one that looks busy with locals.
